What is the Purpose of a Long Life?

August 25, 2014

Throughout history most successful and long-lived civilizations have held a place of respect for elders, and benefited from their life wisdom. By and large this tradition is missing today, to the detriment not only of elders but also of society.

*daysfinalEach moment, each day, each one of us grows older. Thanks to medical advances and wide emphasis on personal fitness, most people will live long enough to be considered old. The average life span has, in fact, been steadily increasing since the dawn of the Twentieth Century, and this trend will likely continue in the Twenty-first Century. This reality raises some critical questions: What is the purpose of a long life? What can and should older people do with their extended years? What roles do older people have in modern societies?

As far back as five millennia ago the Greeks knew a basic life lesson that remains relevant today. Socrates put it succinctly: “the unexamined life is not worth living.”

With that foundational understanding in mind, and after a career of interviewing learned and insightful elders, I assembled an eBook of quotations, from all times and all cultures: Teach Us to Number Our Days.

My intention was to inspire readers to reflect on how we might most wisely journey through advanced maturity. I learned a lot putting the eBook together, and feel privileged to share it.

Age is very mysterious because the essence of the human being — the soul — actually never ages. It’s only the outer covering of the individual that changes.” ~ Beatrice Wood

~ Tales of the Whirling Rainbow ~
Authentic Myths and Mysteries

whirling-rainbow-198x300Tales of the Whirling Rainbow is a journalist’s account of some of the key myths and mysteries of the Americas, and an electrifying exploration of how those myths are echoed in real time as we pivot at the signal year of 2012 and the Sun awakens with solar streams. Veteran journalist Steven McFadden weaves the living myths together seamlessly in a tightly written ebook that is soul-resonant.

Tales of the Whirling Rainbow: Myths & Mysteries— is an account of some of the key spiritual mysteries, and an arresting exploration of how those elements are resounding through real time.

A crucial part of the story commences on June 23, 1995 when traditional wisdom keepers of North America — and a multicultural band of walkers from several continents — began a prophetic journey, walking from First Encounter Beach, Eastham, Massachusetts across the continent to the legendary Western Gate — Point Conception on the Pacific shore. The pilgrimage proceeded for eight months under the dazzling, natural sky sign of the Whirling Rainbow, a key image in the lore of Pte San Wi (White Buffalo Calf Woman) since the birth of the white buffalo in 1993.

The new material in the 2nd edition, based on interviews with traditional Mayan Daykeepers, expands the scope of the ebook by also exploring the key role of the 21,000 pyramids and temples of Mesoamerica as they figure in the 2012 teachings of the Maya. This elaborate network of sacred centers, the Mayan Daykeepers told the author, has a key energetic role to play in keeping the balance as the ‘Sun Awakens,’ Earth Changes intensify, and our human lives attain high velocity.

In this manner, the elders told him, will the different colors and faiths of humanity be moved to heal their web of relationships.

Having traveled widely for over 30 years with Native Elders both north and south, McFadden writes about many of the core insights associated with 2012, including the role the Sun and its solar flares may play. He tells the tales in plain, precise language, creating a quick but absorbing investigation into the mythology of this moment in time. “The calendar of 26,000 years is new for the dominant civilization,” Mayan Daykeepers told the author, “but the calendar portends big changes.”

~ Native Knowings ~
Wisdom Keys for One and All

Nativefinal-199x300As we pivot on prophetic date of Dec. 21, 2012 in relation to Mayan teaching about time, this compact but potent ebook offers a concise compendium of North American (Turtle Island) wisdom teachings for this era, attuned to theme of transition.

Journalist Steven McFadden compiled the insights based on over 30 years of traveling with traditional Native elders. The selections he has made for Native Knowings come from the past and the present, including excepts from some of McFadden’s most popular and enduring dispatches about the Maya, the Seven Fires Teachings, the Hopi, the Whirling Rainbow, and much more.

Smashwords Review: “An excellent read. Informative without being preachy. Exactly what I have been looking for. Bravo!”
